Setup code · . It is filled into the steps below and into the setup QR, so a new tablet skips that screen.
Set up a business screen
Two questions, then the exact steps for your device — with the QR code or download you need on this page.
What are you setting up?
Is this tablet new?
The answer decides how the app gets on — and whether the tablet ends up locked to its screen.
Want a locked tablet but it is already in use? Back up anything on it, factory reset it, and take the Very easy path.
New or factory-reset tablet Very easy
About 8 minutes, most of it waiting for the download. Keep this page open on your phone or computer — the tablet scans a QR from it.
Android 8 or newer with a camera. Leave the tablet on the very first Welcome screen; do not tap through the Android setup.
1Wake the tablet's QR scanner and scan this2 min
Turn the tablet on (or let the factory reset finish). On the first Welcome screen, tap the same spot six times — on most tablets anywhere on the screen, on some the word "Welcome" or "Hi there". A QR scanner opens. Point it at this code. When the tablet asks, join your Wi-Fi on the tablet itself.
Open larger
The tablet may ask you to confirm it belongs to your business and to accept the terms — say yes. Then it downloads IOX Kiosk (about 45 MB), installs it and may restart. Do not touch it until IOX Kiosk opens on its own — three to six minutes on venue Wi-Fi.
2Type your setup code, pick the screen, enter a staff PIN2 min
IOX Kiosk opens on Let's set up this tablet.
- What should it show? — choose the screen this tablet is for, then which lane, station or room if it asks.
- Name this tablet — something your team will recognise, like "Lane 3".
- Staff PIN — any staff member's PIN, then Finish setup.
That's it. The tablet opens straight to its screen on every power-up, no PIN needed. To change anything later, tap the bottom-right corner six times and enter a staff PIN.
If something's off
Six taps and no scanner appears
The tablet is past the Welcome screen. Finish Android setup, then factory reset it (Settings → System → Reset options → Erase all data) and start again from step 1.
"Can't set up your tablet"
Use the QR on this page exactly as shown. A QR with a Wi-Fi name and password built into it makes Samsung tablets stop with this message and nothing else. Factory reset, scan this code, and join Wi-Fi on the tablet when it asks.
"Can't set up device" or "package is invalid"
The tablet downloaded an app that doesn't match this QR. Use only the QR on this page — not one printed from elsewhere — and check the tablet has internet.
Stuck at "Checking for updates" or a black screen
Give it a full five minutes on a working Wi-Fi network. If nothing changes, hold the power button to restart it; setup resumes where it left off.
Tablet already in use Easy
About 5 minutes. The app installs like any other; the tablet is not locked down.
1Scan this with the tablet's camera1 min
Open the tablet's camera, point it at the code, and tap the link it offers. The app file downloads — tap Download if Chrome asks.
Download the app file
2Open the download and allow the install2 min
Tap Open on the finished download. Android stops you once: "your tablet isn't allowed to install unknown apps from this source". Tap Settings, switch on Allow from this source, press Back, then tap Install. When it says "App installed", tap Open.
3Type your setup code, pick the screen, enter a staff PIN2 min
- What should it show? — choose the screen this tablet is for, then which lane, station or room if it asks.
- Name this tablet, then enter any staff member's PIN and tap Finish setup.
4Press Home once and make IOX Kiosk the home app30 sec
Android asks which home app to use — choose IOX Kiosk and tap Always. That's what brings the screen back by itself after a power cut. Mount it, plug in the charger, done.
This tablet can still be swiped out of by a determined guest. For a tablet nobody can leave, factory reset it and take the .
Android TV box Steady
The box has a remote and nothing else — no camera, no touchscreen, no keyboard. None of the steps below need a ladder, a USB port or anything plugged into the box.
Two ways to get the app onto the box — from the Play Store on your laptop, or with the remote on its own — and then one way to set it up.
1From the Play Store, on your laptop2 min
Available once IOX Kiosk is listed for Android TV. It is not listed yet. Route 2 below works today, with the remote and nothing else.
- Sign the TV into the venue's Google account, once. Use one account for the whole venue — something like screens@yourvenue — and sign every TV in the building into that same one.
- On any computer, open the Play listing for IOX Kiosk.
- Next to Install there is a dropdown listing your devices. Choose the TV, then press Install.
The app arrives on the TV by itself. Nothing is typed on the remote, and from then on updates arrive through Play on their own.
2With the remote only, today6 min
- On the TV, open the Play Store and install Downloader (by AFTVnews, free).
- Let it install apps: Settings → Apps → Security & restrictions → Unknown sources, and switch on Downloader. On Google TV this is per app, so allowing Downloader allows nothing else.
- Open Downloader and type the code 5752554 into its address field, then press Go. Seven digits on the on-screen keyboard; it is a short code for ioxkiosk.com/tv, which you can type instead, and either one fetches the app file.
- When the download finishes, choose Install, then Open.
On Google TV a new app may not show on the home row. Find it under Settings → Apps → See all apps → IOX Kiosk → Open, once. After setup it starts itself.
3Set it up from the TV's own screen2 min
On a television the first screen leads with Pair from your dashboard, because reading six characters off a TV beats typing a setup code into it with a d-pad.
On that first screen the remote also opens Device controls — press right, up, left, up, right, down — with no PIN, because nothing is set up yet. That is where Wi-Fi & network, brightness, volume and the app version live. Once the screen is set up the same sequence asks for a staff PIN first.
- The TV shows a six-character code.
- On a laptop or phone, open your dashboard → Settings → Tablets & Screens → Pair a TV.
- Type the code, pick the screen and the lane, name it, press Pair.
- The TV switches over in a few seconds. Nothing else is typed on the remote.
Or take the setup-code path underneath it, with the remote:
- Pick the product and the location, if it asks.
- What should it show? — for a lane that is Lane TV scoreboard, not Lane screen — then which lane.
- Name this tablet — something like "TV Lane 3".
- Enter any staff member's PIN, then Finish setup.
After a power cut
What happens depends on the box, so here it is plainly.
- A Google TV box or set (Chromecast with Google TV, Google TV Streamer, onn, and Sony, TCL or Hisense sets) comes back on its own home screen. A staff member presses Home and opens IOX Kiosk. That is one press, and it is the truth on these devices: they have no "default home app" setting to change.
- A plain Android TV box that has Settings → Apps → Default apps → Home app can be pointed at IOX Kiosk there. Then it comes back by itself.
- A box IOX set up before shipping it — or one set up with the laptop steps in docs/android-tv.md before it was mounted — comes back by itself on every device, Google TV included.
Updates
A box installed from the Play Store (route 1) updates through Play, with nobody present.
A box installed with Downloader (route 2) shows Update ready inside Device controls — on the remote: right, up, left, up, right, down, then a staff PIN — with an Update now action, so it never interrupts a live scoreboard. Android asks once to let IOX Kiosk install updates (Settings → Apps → Security & restrictions → Unknown sources → IOX Kiosk). Android closes the app while it installs; press Home and open IOX Kiosk when it is done.
Until that build ships, updating a Downloader install means running ioxkiosk.com/tv through Downloader again.
Fire TV and other devices
Amazon Fire TV is not supported. The app installs, but Fire OS never lets it come back into the screen after a power cut and does not carry our fleet messages, so the TV cannot be updated or managed from your dashboard. Use an Android TV or Google TV box instead.
Roku, LG, Samsung and Vizio sets are not Android and cannot run the app at all. A set or box on Android 7 or older cannot install it.
If something's off
Nothing shows on the TV yet
A TV scoreboard follows the tablet at its lane. It fills in when that tablet starts a game.
The box has a web browser and you'd rather skip the app
Open the screen's own web address from your dashboard and make it full screen. Same picture, nothing to install — it just won't restart itself after a power cut.
Last resort: a USB drive
If the box has no Play Store and no Downloader, download the app file on a computer and copy iox-kiosk.apk onto a USB drive. Plug the drive into the box, open its file app (Files, File Manager or File Browser), choose the drive and the file, and allow that app to install unknown apps when Android asks. Then carry on at route 3.
